The Camp Hebron community and countless friends across Pennsylvania and beyond are mourning the unexpected passing of Deke Rider, Executive Director of Camp Hebron in Halifax, Pennsylvania, who died following a medical emergency on Saturday, July 18.
In a heartfelt announcement, Camp Hebron shared that Deke experienced a medical emergency on Saturday afternoon that resulted in his passing. The organization asked the public to respect the privacy of the Rider family while requesting continued prayers during this time of profound loss.
Deke devoted his life to Christian ministry, leadership, and creating places where people could grow in faith, build meaningful relationships, and experience the beauty of God’s creation. As Executive Director of Camp Hebron, he helped lead the 340-acre Christian retreat and camping ministry, guiding its mission of cultivating a sanctuary where people could connect with God, nature, and one another. His leadership, compassion, and servant’s heart made a lasting impact on campers, guests, volunteers, and staff alike.
Even as the Camp Hebron family grieves, the organization has expressed its commitment to continuing its summer ministry in Deke’s honor. Staff members shared that they are leaning on their faith while preparing to serve campers, trusting in God’s strength, comfort, and peace during this difficult season.
Before joining Camp Hebron, Deke served for many years as Site Director at Wesley Woods Camp & Retreat Center in Indianola, Iowa. He also served with the Iowa United Methodist Conference, worked with Christian Adoption Consultants, and dedicated his career to ministries focused on serving families, young people, and communities through faith-based outreach.
A graduate of Simpson College, where he studied History and Elementary Education, Deke was remembered by former classmates and friends as an exceptionally selfless individual. One longtime friend described him as “one of the most selfless people I have ever known,” recalling their years together as teammates, fraternity brothers, and companions whose friendship endured long after college.
Deke is survived by his wife, Su Rider, along with family members, friends, colleagues, and the many lives he influenced through decades of faithful service. His legacy will continue through the countless individuals who found encouragement, purpose, and spiritual renewal because of his leadership.
